George P gave me a conversion tip this week that had never crossed my mind before.


In an effort to get a better sense of how people using Google ads were doing, Google did an analysis of 900,000 mobile ads' landing pages spanning 126 countries.

They found that the majority of the mobile sites they checked had low conversions, not because the offer was bad but because the sites were slow and bloated.

For 70% of the pages they analysed, it took nearly seven seconds for the visual content above the fold to display on the screen, and it took more than 10 seconds to fully load all visual content above and below the fold.


They then took it a step further. They trained a deep neural network (a computer system modelled on the human brain and nervous system) with a large set of bounce rate and conversion data.


The network, which had a 90% prediction accuracy, found that as page load time goes from one second to seven seconds, the probability of a mobile site visitor bouncing increases by 113%.

Similarly, as the number of elementsโ€”text, titles, imagesโ€”on a page goes from 400 to 6,000, the probability of conversion drops 95%.

If people are bouncing, they're not opting in for your offers...
